Four young newcomers try to integrate in Belgium, and wonder how to deal with love, friendship and seduction in this grey country. In an abandoned theatre their imagination takes the upper hand.

Jury Declaration, Transcending Borders Festival:

“Newcomers presents an optimistic angle where love is prevailing over racism and radicalism. It reflects on an integration and relational model that could inspire decisionmakers for future sustainability and social cohesion. Through artistic performances, we get to know the characters, their struggles, their dreams and their fears presented with honesty and with no shame. In the end, the film serves as a perspective of the new generation living in Europe, opens the dialogue along the lines of tolerance. For its urgency and the bravery to differ from the mainstream discourse, we award it the Future Award.”

Portrait of Camille Ghekiere - Director
When I was ten I got an assignment at school to draw a ship. I drew a ship and added a clan of mermaids, caught up in a family drama that involved abduction and ancestral secrets. Without hesitation my teacher put ‘0/10’ on my drawing, and showed it to the class as an example of not listening to an assignment. I had to draw a ship and I came up with a story. 20 years later, this is what I still do: seeing stories.

I write and direct documentaries with fictional freedom and fictional work with a sense of humor. Currently I’m working on a dreamy, scientific short doc: ‘Coral City’, co-directed with Charlotte De Cort (for Docville and Canvas), a documentary feature ‘Les Dames Blanches’ (with support of the VAF, Koning Boudewijn Stichting, coproduced by Canvas), and I’m researching for ‘Machorra’, a short doc in the south of Spain. I have a background as a historian, which thought me good stories are to be found in real life and there is no such thing as one truth. I also teach creative documentary.

My storytelling style is characterized by symbolism and evocation, the imminent possibility of humor and playfulness, and a close attention to music and sound.
